This is so amazing! Hahahaha.
I’m not sure where I read this (possibly songmeanings.net) but I think Sufjan’s shoe imagery is a lot about self sufficiency and self reliance. Your shoes got you where you are today, and they reflect where you’ve been.
Sorry to get metaphorical about a Suf joke.
